Here's a thought for this unique day in history. Everyone breathing, every boy and
girl, every man and woman, and everyone on every continent. We all get one extra day
in 2012. That's right. It's Leap Year. The time when the calendar looks
at eternity and is the boss. And today is that day. February 29th, 2012.
So, my blog begins with a question to all of us. What will you do with your extra 24 hours?
It is not often that we cheat the clock. Unless your phone goes dead, the battery in your car is taken out, the alarm clock is unplugged, or the watch gets broken, time goes on. Time is the one thing that we cannot control. In the words of one poet, "Time is ticking away, tick, tick, ticking away." Toby Mac, DCTalk
Another poet wrote, "Confusion never stops, closing walls and ticking clocks, am I part of the cure or am I a part of the disease." Chris Martin, Coldplay
One more poet wrote, "I have seen the God-given task with which the sons of men are to be occupied. He has made everything beautiful in its time." Solomon, Ecclesiastes 3:10-11
The application from these poets? As time is ticking away, we are a part of the beautiful cure that God wants to bring upon this earth. So, think about the coming year. You could use the extra 24 hours all at one time, you could use the day of February 29th, or you could use one hour at a time. But, somehow and at some point you must take the time to spend the extra day with intent. Let me give you a few ideas:
-Pray an extra 28 minutes a week to add the extra 24 hours this year
-Pray an extra 3 or 4 minutes a day to get the extra 24 hours
-Take the entire day of February 29th and fast for a spiritual breakthrough
-Serve at a soup kitchen one day this year
-Volunteer at a local shelter or mission
-Go to your youth ministry about 30 minutes before it starts and pray each week
-Stay after church each week for about 30 minutes and pray through the message
-About 15 minutes prayer and reading in the morning and 15 minutes at night will make up for the extra time
Let me know what your plans are by responding to this blog. Then, at the end of the year 2012, I will post some of the responses and remind you all of your intentions. Come on. Time is ticking away and God has called each of us to have a beautiful effect upon this world.
The one extra day. What will you do with it? Whatever you do, don't waste the extra time.
